When to sign up, and what to have ready.
Turning 65
Your first window to sign up is seven months long. It opens three months before the month you turn 65 and closes three months after. Miss it, and a late penalty can last as long as you have Medicare.
Still working at 65
With coverage from your own or your spouse’s current job, you may be able to wait on Part B. Once the job or that coverage ends, whichever comes first, you have 8 months to sign up for Part B. COBRA and retiree coverage don’t count.
Already on Medicare
From October 15 to December 7, you can change your health and drug coverage for next year. Plans change every year, so it’s worth a look each fall.
What to have ready
- Your Medicare card or Social Security letter, if you have one
- Every prescription, with the dose
- The doctors and hospital you want to keep
- Your current coverage, if you have any
